Faith, family and finances

Faith, family and finances

11.23.2022

You don’t need me to tell you …

But it’s officially the holiday season! This may be cheesy to say, but it’s truly the most wonderful time of the year. The lights, decorations and carols — and, yes, shopping! — bring me a little extra comfort and joy every winter. Of course, before we can start trimming the tree, we have to trim the turkey first.

If you haven’t noticed, I’m a tad excited.

In addition to eating great food, I’ve always thought Thanksgiving provides the perfect opportunity to reflect on what’s good in my life. I think we can all admit there’s a lot of negativity in the world, but I’m choosing to keep a positive attitude. Focusing on progress, peace and perspective puts me in a way better place.

I have so many amazing gifts to be grateful for — and I’m sure you do, too! From my career on the LPGA Tour to the incredible people I’m surrounded by, I’m filled with so much grace and gratitude every single day. I couldn’t ask for anything more! When I take a step back, three really big things come to mind:

FAITH

Faith is super important to me, and it’s always guided me in everything I do and everywhere I want to go. While my spiritual beliefs, principles and values have shaped me as a person, through all the highs and lows I’ve experienced, a different kind of “faith” has played a pivotal role as I’ve advanced in my career.

Faith in my ability.

Faith in my preparation.

Faith in my team.

Most importantly, faith in myself.

In 2022, I’ve been fortunate enough to enjoy a tremendous amount of success on the course. I’ve trained hard. I’ve trusted my talent. I’ve tried my best! I really went into this season with the goal of improving all facets of my game rather than getting too fixated on the leaderboard at events. I know winning is what everyone shoots for (and I do, too!), but I’m really proud of myself for fine-tuning every part of my craft. My ball-striking, putting and chipping were much stronger and more consistent than ever.

I told myself if I can put in the practice and have faith in my process, the results would take care of themselves. Hard work pays off! I couldn’t be happier with how my year has unfolded, especially with seven top-15 finishes, and how far I’ve come as a professional golfer. I still have so much to accomplish and even more to learn, but I’m thankful to be living out my dream on the LPGA Tour. I still have to pinch myself every morning, and I know for a fact my nine-year-old self would think this is pretty cool.

FAMILY (AND FRIENDS)

Where would I be without my support system?

They’re my rock!

This week, I’m heading to my grandma’s house down in Oklahoma to celebrate Thanksgiving with so many of my family members. I can’t wait! We always traveled to grandma’s when I was growing up, and it’s a tradition I look forward to every November. I absolutely love reminiscing about old stories and making new memories while we’re at it. When the Knights get together, we laugh and have a blast.

Let’s be real, though — Thanksgiving is also about eating, eating and some more eating. It’s the one day of the year where you don’t have to feel so guilty about going back for seconds and then maybe even thirds. My favorite dish is sweet potato casserole, which we make extra sweet with pecans and marshmallows. It’s delicious! I’m also baking a warm cranberry apple crisp, which is to absolutely die for.

After a lonnnnnnnng year of traveling and competing, I’m thrilled to kick back, relax and catch up with my family.

But, for me, my family extends beyond just my actual family. Golf may seem like it is an individual sport from the outside, but as with many other professions it takes a village to succeed and achieve the very best outcomes. I wouldn’t be where I am without my team, including my coaches, sponsors and mentors. They’re all committed to my improvement and want to see me thrive when I’m out there on the golf course. The effort and energy they give have helped lead me in the right direction and hone my skills.

No matter what your job is, I’m sure there are people around you who go above and beyond to get the most out of you!

FINANCES

Yes, money matters.

I’m getting soooo close to moving out and buying my own house. It’s been a priority of mine for a few years now, but the pandemic made me assess my options and press the pause button on my search. Because I’ve grown as a golfer and have been able to perform at a high level, I’ve made a ton of progress on purchasing a house. Not only have I been playing better, but I’ve been saving better, too. That’s allowed me to buckle down on my budget and really enhance my overall financial well-being.

In the meantime, I’m doing the little things to stay on top of my expenses and secure and protect my financial future. One of the biggest changes I’ve made is booking my flights to tournaments in advance so I can get the cheapest deal. Every penny counts! Being proactive has helped me take charge of my spending and conserve some cash, so I can continue to set aside part of my income for my first home.

From my faith to my family to my finances, I have so much to be thankful for this year. I wish all my fans and readers a happy Thanksgiving, and I hope you find a minute to reflect on the awesome victories in your life.
