FAQ
When we’re notified that the holder of a work retirement account has passed away, their account is secured to protect it. Beneficiaries are identified and accounts are created under their name; they can then request a distribution. Beneficiaries can be people or organizations, and there may be more than one.
We accept official notice of death from any individual with knowledge of or involvement in the claim and plan administrators.
To begin the death claim process, we need a copy of the death certificate. This serves as official notice.
On average, the process takes about one month after all required documents are received. This includes review and processing time. Timing may vary based on individual circumstances and completeness of documentation.
A member of our Beneficiary Support Services team can help confirmed beneficiaries understand their options, which may include:
- Opening an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) with Empower
- Receiving regular payments over time
- Transferring funds to an existing account
- Receiving a check
Carefully consider all your options, including tax implications, fees, and expenses before moving money between accounts.
A member of our Beneficiary Support Services team can explain any timing considerations that apply to your situation.
