VoIP Providers: Meet E-911 Regulations

bulletMay 19, 2005: The FCC mandates that Internet telephone companies must deliver 911 calls to the customer's local emergency operator. Companies have 120 days to comply.
bulletPublic Safety Answering Points (PSAP Info) database provides highly accurate boundaries for identifying jurisdictional areas for PSAPs and telephone exchanges, helping you route emergency calls to correct operator
bulletE-911 Callers are assisted by an operator who identifies the caller's location, requests the program to match corresponding PSAP, and initiates a 3-way call with appropriate emergency response operator

PSAP Info: Public Safety Answering Points for VoIP Carriers to meet E-911 Mandate

A PSAP is a facility equipped and staffed to receive 9-1-1 calls. Primary PSAPs receive calls directly. If the call is relayed or transferred, the next receiving PSAP is designated a Secondary PSAP. Managed by the state government system, PSAPs are typically located at the county or city level.  There are currently in excess of 4,400 PSAPs in the U.S.

bulletBecause rural areas and some suburbs have no PSAP, the database also includes information on the local sheriff or police departments who cover emergencies in these areas
bulletComprehensive list and boundary file – detailed PSAP information and sheriff file
bulletBoundaries are jurisdiction - based versus by street plan -- includes water bodies and unpopulated areas
bulletAccurate, current data – daily, systematic process to capture updates, changes
bulletEstablished relationships – daily direct contact with PSAPs
bulletFrequency and flexibility in subscription update options
bulletCost effective, offers multiple subscription schedules and volume discounts
bulletEasy to implement -- digital file, rather than paper files and other varied formats
