What is this "whole mapping thing" about?
Surprisingly, the "whole mapping thing" is not necessarily about mapping. It's really about analyzing information with a location aspect to make more informed, intelligent business decisions. For example, the location of your customers, assets (stores, mobile resources, infrastructure, etc.) and competitors all have a bearing on how you market and sell your products and services, as well as on how you operate and grow your business.

I understand what we need to do, but don’t have the people to do it. Can you do the work for me?
The short answer is yes, absolutely. It's not uncommon for our customers to request we perform data preparation and analysis for them, and provide them with answers rather than products. Our staff has more than 100 combined years experience in mapping and location-based analysis. We also offer map production services, consulting and application development and hosting. Why do I need to purchase data separately?
When you purchase a mapping or GIS solution you have a specific need you want to address. A mapping solution that includes all of the data available for every industry and application need would be too large for a computer system to handle, too difficult to maintain when data is updated, and most importantly, would end up costing you more and wasting your resources since you would be buying more data than you need. By purchasing the data separately, you are customizing your mapping system to meet the needs of your business. It also allows for growth of your system in the event your needs change.
Is there any difference between data from different vendors?
Yes. When raw demographic data is released by the U.S. Census Bureau, various data vendors offer this data in an easy-to-use format. As each year passes, these data vendors use their own data methodology to calculate estimates as well as future projections on the data, resulting in variations in the data products they offer. In addition, vendors with expertise in specific industries such as insurance, telecommunications, financial collect and provide industry-specific data
What do I get if I spend more on “better” data?
Spending more doesn’t necessarily get you better data. Census data is census data; however, data providers update projections of the data using their own data modeling techniques. You will spend more on data depending upon how often you want updates. For example, the U.S. Postal Service updates ZIP Code information every two months. A data provider will charge you one rate if you receive an annual update. A higher rate will be charged if you want quarterly or bi-monthly updates of the data. How you purchase the data should depend upon the needs of your business. It is always a good idea to inquire as to how often a dataset is updated and the differences in pricing for those updates when making your purchasing decisions.
Can I get data from other parts of the world from Empower Geographics?

What is geocoding and why do I need to do it?
Geocoding is the process of matching streets addresses to real-world latitude and longitude coordinates. This allows, for instance, the location of your customers, stores, etc. to be placed on a map. Geocoding is one of the first tasks you perform when using a mapping solution. It's important that you use a geocoder that offers the right level of accuracy for your needs and can automatically correct errors in address data.
